Highlights from “Law in FOSS: Who Owns Open Code?”
The FOSS Club of Sai University hosted a thought provoking online session on Law in Open Source, exploring how legal frameworks intersect with collaborative software development.
The discussion unpacked key ideas around copyright in software, clarified what “ownership” means in open source projects, and examined why patenting code is often impractical. Real world cases, such as LinkedIn vs HiQ, were used to connect global legal debates with the Indian context.
Students also gained clarity on the legal implications of sharing code on platforms like GitHub. The session encouraged participants to think critically about how law can both protect and shape open collaboration, reinforcing the need for legal awareness among developers.
