It was discussed that hosting more events this semester would be difficult due to the mid-semester exams and other components. Smita ma’am suggested organizing an inauguration event for the club, though further details are yet to be finalized. Regarding media, there was a brief discussion about weekly social media posts, but no media team members were present to give updates. For the next semester, the club is planning to host larger events, potentially bigger than the FOSS Hackathon, and is looking for sponsorships from companies such as Zerodha. Minutes of Meeting
We had a meeting today on 17th January 2025, discussing the foss club’s event for symbitech, which is scheduled for 24th and 25th january. The event will feature teams of 2 to 4 members, facing various quiz rounds based on open-source themes. The competition will include answering questions, solving puzzles, and completing practical tasks, with the top teams competing in the final round. We called out for volunteers to assist with the event, particularly for pre-event designing tasks. We also discussed that if our current budget doesn’t meet the requirements, we need to secure sponsors by 20th January. the banners for the event are ready, and we briefly touched upon flyers and posters, which are still in progress.

Sorry the thread has been inactive! Our college fest quiz was a success in Feb :+1:. The team was able to take care of everything independently, even though I was completely AWOL due to medical issues.

We’ve picked up a new collaborative project working on a Android Automotive (AAOSP) device for 2 wheelers.

Some interesting statistics which made me happy:

  1. Since 2023, the club has helped over 100 students with Linux.
  2. We have had the most active members of any SIT club since 2024.
  3. I received 5 compliments from freshers regd. our social media presence. Everyone loves the design language. Kudos to the FOSS U team for providing such a nice Design Library!
  4. We have hit 300+ members in our community.

We’re all prepped ready to go for AY2025. We have had excellent success with the new batch. Our club strength has gone from 30 to 65+.

Recently we also organised an interactive Git bootcamp, helping participants learn about Git, PRs, etc. We are seeing a lot of excitement on campus :).

We have finally wrapped up the Linux from Scratch project that Vedant Shinde was working on. Blog will be up soon.

We are working on 5 articles in the open source AI domain for a college magazine.

We are planning a 24 hour hackathon for October.

FOSS Club SymbiTech 2025 Event Report

Executive Summary

The FOSS Club successfully executed two key events, Operation Zero Hour and the Linux Installation Party, during SymbiTech 2025. The events secured a total of 210 combined registrations, with 64 unique teams participating in the flagship technical game. This success, coupled with the completion of over 40 functional, on-site Linux installations, confirms the club’s efficacy in delivering technical engagement and promoting open source adoption. The event benefited from direct support provided by volunteers from the FOSS United Pune community.

1. Event Overview and Operation Zero Hour

The FOSS Club’s engagement at SymbiTech 2025 featured two distinct activities, both strategically aligned with the club’s core mission of technical innovation and community advocacy.

The flagship event, Operation Zero Hour, was structured as a technical challenge and simulation. The primary objective was to test participants’ critical thinking, execution speed, and teamwork by requiring them to halt a simulated missile launch within a strict ten-minute limit.

  • Participation: 64 unique teams
  • Structure: Combination of software and hardware components
  • Special Element: Capture The Flag (CTF), requiring rapid problem-solving skills

In adherence to FOSS principles, the club committed to open sourcing the underlying architecture and code for Operation Zero Hour following the event, reinforcing its core principle of collaborative development.

2. Linux Installation Party and Open-Source Adoption

The Linux Installation Party focused on providing direct, tangible support to the student community for open source OS migration.

  • Activities:

    • Hands-on Linux installation assistance
    • Technical discussions on migration benefits and practices
    • Distribution of advocacy resources

The event successfully completed 40+ functional Fedora installations on the spot, offering stable, long-term support for open source adoption.

Participants also received guidance and resources, including materials such as the “End of 10” website, to promote sustained engagement with Linux.

3. Community and Institutional Collaboration

The execution of both events was significantly bolstered by external collaboration and institutional support.

  • Technical Support: Provided by volunteers Priyanshu, Himanshu, and Mihica from the FOSS United Pune community.
  • Impact: Their involvement ensured technical continuity and the ability to effectively manage high participant volume.

The club’s activities affirmed its position as a key institutional component in promoting technical literacy and open source adoption.

4. Participant Feedback and Conclusion

The overall success of the events is validated by:

  • 210+ combined registrations
  • Overwhelmingly positive participant feedback
  • Testimonials praising both the technical challenge and community outreach

The high turnout indicates a growing and active interest in FOSS principles on campus.

The successful delivery and open sourcing of the flagship challenge affirm the club’s vital role in strengthening the FOSS community at SIT and provide strong operational momentum for future projects.
