This thread contains the information about **USAR FOSS CLUB,** as it is now 4 months into its second year since being founded in August 2025.

The purpose of this thread is to post updates on the club activities, event plans/reports, and projects undertaken by the club.

This also comes with a need to do a write-up for previously done work, recently or much in the past, clarify our working methods, where our interests lie. What new ideas/systems we have come up with and what works and doesn’t work for us.

USAR FOSS Club (UFC) is the student-driven Free and Open Source Software community at the University School of Automation and Robotics (USAR), Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), Delhi. The club was founded in August 2025.

We’re using this thread to document the club’s journey: events we’ve organized, projects we’ve worked on, systems we’ve built, experiments we’ve tried, and the lessons we’ve picked up along the way. We’ll also share upcoming plans, opportunities to collaborate, and things we’d like to improve.

## What are we trying to build?

Our focus is on building a **builder-first FOSS ecosystem** on campus with a homely feeling of belonging for all.

This started as a way of me and a few others needing a community in the college to belong that would be liberal enough to _let us be_ while also streamlining us into a team with some purpose. Cut to now, we want students to discover how FOSS impacts us, how it is built and maintained in the real world, work with other builders, contribute to existing projects, and eventually help sustain FOSS and maintain FOSS of their own, and give back what we owe to the broader ecosystem.

This means making room for different kinds of participation:

- **Development:** web, systems, AI/ML, systems, hardware, cybersecurity, mobile, games and other areas of software.

- **Design and product thinking:** UI/UX, usability, documentation and making software accessible.

- **Community and operations:** organizing events, managing projects, connecting contributors and sustaining initiatives.

- **Upstream contribution:** understanding existing repositories, investigating issues, submitting patches, testing changes and working with maintainers.

- and much more that we learn and keep coming across over the times passing. XD

The idea is to give people a path from curiosity to practical work, with opportunities to go deeper as their interests develop.

## How we’ve approached this so far

Since August 2025, we’ve experimented with a few different formats:

- Introductory sessions to make FOSS approachable through OCCs (Open Community Chintans)

- A way of self funding that also teaches students

- A multi-month open mentorship programme for student projects.

- Community sessions exploring topics beyond conventional software development.

- Internal tooling to track contributions, projects and participation.

Our flagship event, FOSS Forge, has also evolved. The first edition used contribution rounds, curated GitHub issues and a project-pitching round. FOSS Forge 2.0 moved towards a challenge-pool format with real engineering briefs from open-source projects, non-profits and technical partners.

We’ll keep this thread updated with reports, project progress, plans and retrospectives. This thread will contain more detail on each of these. So follow/keep reading to see what worked for us, and what we are still repenting on.
