Blender Tutorials in Kannada on YouTube

Hello everybody! My name is Advay. I’m 14 year old Blender enthusiast. I have been learning Blender from when I was 11 years old, and from early this year I started giving workshops and talks on it as well. I have hosted four workshops and one talk, of which one of the workshops and the talk has been at FOSSUnited events.

In October, I applied for a grant to build a 6-episode tutorial series on Blender Basics in Kannada. After a few weeks, the grant was approved, and I have received the first tranche already. This will be my first ever sponsored content on YouTube!!!

In this post, I want to share the plan I had proposed and also the current status.

Overall Plan

The entire Blender Kannada Tutorial Course will comprise 6 episodes, plus one introduction, one BTS, and one conclusion video. That makes it a total of 9 videos.

Episode Structure

As described in the introduction video, each episode will cover one aspect of Blender modeling as showcased in the visual below.

Team

My friend Aarav, another 14-year-old from Chennai, is also with me on this project. He helps me with putting together certain elements (animation, models etc) that will go into the videos.

Here is how we are splitting the work between us.

  1. I plan and script the visuals and dialogues.
  2. Aarav creates the visuals
  3. I record my video, which comes towards the end of the video.
  4. I make a Blender animation as a title card.
  5. I edit them all together, with Aarav and I both looking up appropriate royalty-free BGM.

Status Update

A draft of the first episode is done. In the first episode, I cover:

  • Blender installation
  • Overview of Blender’s interface
  • Navigating the 3D viewport
  • Understanding the coordinate system and basic transformations (move, rotate, scale)

While the narration/voice-over is mostly in Kannada, I have mixed English text for pointing out on-screen elements of Blender.

The second episode is in the works, and it should be complete by the end of this month. The goal is to complete all episodes by April 2026.

I am also yet to create a repository into which I will upload all the Blender files and other documents created and referenced in the videos. While making videos public, I will be inserting a link to the repository in the description against all the videos.

Reflections

  • Since this is the first time I am making such a series, I have a feeling that with each episode I will discover a better way of communicating something, and that will give me an opportunity to go back and rework earlier episodes.
  • It’s best if I upload all episodes at once and make them public.
  • I am going to record different shoutouts for each of the episodes, and then finalize on a standard one for use in all the episodes
  • Kannada is my mother tongue, but recording in Kannada is hard  In the first few trials I discovered that I speak so much informal Kannada that it won’t look good on screen.
  • Text overlays in Kannada is not as complicated as I thought
  • I think that I may re-record, re-edit, or otherwise change a few aspects of each of the videos once all six episodes are done.
  • My current focus is to get a reasonably good draft done for all six episodes first, before fine-tuning them.
  • Once a working draft of the entire series is ready, I will share it here and seek feedback. But if you get a chance to watch a draft of the first episode, please do share any feedback you may have.

One full month after I sent the first episode draft, I’m excited to share a draft of Episode 2.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Basics of Blender Modelling
  • Basic 3D Shapes
  • Modelling the complete Table and Vase scene

Just like the previous episode, the narration/voice-over is mainly in Kannada, with English on-screen text to highlight and explain Blender interface elements.

I believe I’ve established a solid and repeatable workflow for future episodes after completing this one. Typically, I spend around 4–5 hours recording, followed by another 5–6 hours on base editing (removing silences and bad takes). The rest of the time is dedicated to creating clean and effective overlays. Overall, this episode came together much more smoothly than I initially expected.

Keep up the good work!

Also, try to see if that new YouTube feature which Auto dubs videos is there for you. It automatically translates videos into English by creating a separate audio track. One need not do anything, YouTube will do that. Viewers can see both in Kannada (original) and English (auto dubbed).

Thanks. I will explore this.

I was also thinking of taking a look at video dubbing feature in Sarvam

The first draft of Episode 5 is now out.

This episode is all about animation, it showcases

  • How to download and use a pre-modelled fan object, in this case from from PolyHaven
  • How to place and animate the fan
  • Using animation graph editor to fine tune the animation

Please take a let me know your feedback.

Work on Episode 6 has started. I am done with recording my voice over and video. I just have to work on editing and finish the overlays. I hope to complete them by first week of April and post a draft, before taking a two week break for a planned trek to Manali.

PS: I haven’t used auto-dubs or Sarvam as yet. I want to finish off the draft episodes fully before venturing into that.

Clarity of the video is pretty good ! Eye focus is very sharp - and that makes this engaging.

Can the video direct viewers how to find the rest of the videos in the series… will this be in the description ?

Usage of some english words could be eliminated I feel, e.g. “exit”, “add”, “rotate”, “three sixty”. I don’t watch TV and don’t really know what is acceptable “kanglish” btw  Not asking you to change these btw - we’ll discuss when we meet on Saturday (assuming you’re coming to the blr meetup).

Thank you, Shree uncle, for watching the video and for the feedback!

Good point on the navigation. The videos I have published so far are drafts, I will be going over them one more time. In the final uploads, I will add an “end screen” at the end of each one so people can just click to go to the next episode. I’ll also put the previous video and the full playlist links in the description so they’re easy to find.

About the English words, I will definitely try to use fewer full English sentences. But for words like “add,” “rotate,” and “exit,” I think it’s better to keep them since those are the actual button names in Blender, it might be confusing if I change those.

Sadly, I can’t make it to the BLR meetup this month as I have a few other things lined up. Hope you have a good time there!
