FOSS Club IIIT Kalyani 2025–26

Hello everyone,

I’m Sahil Sujit Singh, and I’m really excited to take on the role of Core of the FOSS Club IIIT Kalyani for the year 2025–26.

The FOSS Club has always been about more than just coding — it’s about building, sharing, and growing together. This year, I want to make it an even more vibrant space where students can learn by doing, explore open-source tools, contribute to real-world projects, and experiment fearlessly.

:crystal_ball: Plans for This Tenure

Here’s what we’re looking forward to:

  1. Continuing successful initiatives like FOSS Alternative of the Week

  2. Practical workshops — Linux commands, Git/GitHub, first contributions

  3. Monthly meetups + collaborative events with other clubs.

  4. Linux Fest, FOSS evangelist sessions, and open-source hackathons

  5. FOSS Meme Night — a fun event celebrating open-source culture
    …and a lot more!

:date: Plans for This Semester

Since September was packed with midsems and October already has the freshers’ exams, we’re starting things a bit lighter this semester.

October

Build our core team and stay active on social media with initiatives like FOSS Alternative of the Week (supported by our pseudo-core team).

Host online/offline FOSS evangelist sessions to introduce juniors to open source and its benefits.

Core team form will be open 2nd–25th October (extended due to 1st-year midsems: 7th–15th Oct).

November

Git Workshop + Linux Installation Party :
Day 1: Intro to Ubuntu/Linux, why FOSS > Windows, privacy, efficiency, and the open-source philosophy.

Day 2: Hands-on Linux + Ubuntu, dual-boot setups, VirtualBox installs.

Each day will wrap up with fun quizzes, meme-making contests, and exciting prizes.

Whether you love coding, design, documentation, or are just curious about open source — you’ll find your place here.

Let’s make 2025–26 a year of learning, building, and growing together.
The future of tech is open let’s shape it.

:jigsaw:EVENT HIGHLIGHTS AND REFLECTION : FOSS club IIITK’s Intro to FOSS 2025-26

The FOSS Club of IIIT Kalyani successfully hosted its Orientation & Info Session on 16th Oct 2025, marking the beginning of another exciting year of open-source learning, collaboration, and community building.

The session was led by me @sahilssingh04 , the current core of FOSS IIITK, introducing the first-year students to the world of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and shared the club’s vision of promoting open-source culture and ideology across the campus.

The session covered several key topics:

Introduction to FOSS – Understanding the core ideologies of open source and why we prefer open, community-driven software over proprietary systems.

Why FOSS Matters – Discussing the significance of open source in today’s tech-driven world, its benefits, and how contributing to FOSS helps students learn, grow, and build real-world skills.

FOSS Communities & Projects – A quick walkthrough of well-known organizations and tools like Linux, Git, GitHub, MLH, FOSS United, and many more.

My presentation also highlighted some of our club’s past successful events such as FOSS Foundation 2.0, FOSS on Air, and various workshops that have helped students get hands-on experience with open tools and platforms.

I wrapped up my session by encouraging the freshers to join the FOSS Club and become part of a growing community dedicated to learning, sharing, and building together in the open.

After the main presentation, @Mrutyunjay_Lodhi , our former club lead, shared his valuable insights on the career and professional side of FOSS — explaining how open-source experience plays a vital role in placements, internships, and personal branding.
He also talked about community management, funding, and introduced everyone to our college’s official open-source GitHub repository, inviting students to start contributing to IIITK’s own projects.

The session concluded with a short interactive discussion and a fun sticker distribution, making the event light-hearted and engaging.

:star2: Event Reflection

Number of attendees: Around 50–60 students participated.

Feedback: We received a large number of positive responses through our recruitment forms, with many students expressing interest in joining and contributing to the club.
