A Month of Building: What FOSS Hack 2026 Looked Like

FOSS Hack 2026 ran through the entire month of March 2026. No themes imposed from the top, no restrictions on problem domains, just build something that is open and of use to the broader community, builders given the space and encouragement to create freely.

A thank you to the judges who reviewed every submission, the local hosts who took FOSS Hack to their cities, and the partner projects who opened up their codebases and stayed engaged through the month.

We had 799 projects submitted across 2,360 teams and 5,430 participants, across the country who had engaged with the event in some form.

The Evaluation Process

The process worked in two structured stages:

Stage 1 - Eligibility Check
Where timeframe/consistency, Open source practices, proprietary API dependency, deployability or demonstrability was checked.

Stage 2 - Scored Evaluation
Communication, technical quality, creativity and innovation, UI/UX

These scores were combined and weighed to arrive at the final rankings. Below are the projects that earned the prizes. Each of them demonstrated strong technical execution, clear communication, real-world utility, and the spirit of open source at its best.

A note to everyone who participated - If your project didn’t make the final list this time, we hope the experience was still worth it.

And congratulations to the winning teams!

Hey everyone! Aarav Mehta here (Duct Tape & Dreams member), thank you to the FOSS United team and judges for putting together such a fantastic experience. And thank you to the entire FOSS United community!

As a team of 16 and 17-year-olds, this was our first time participating in a hackathon and we learned more in those 30 days about real-world open-source practices, writing clean code, and pushing through roadblocks than we ever thought we could. It was an amazing experience and a lot of fun!

Huge congratulations to all the other winners and everyone who shipped a project! It is incredibly inspiring to see what this community built. We are going to keep having fun building out Wave Shed. If there are any features you would like to see added feel free to open a feature request on our GitHub Issues page and we will get to work!

Hey folks,

This is Dhanush from Team DevGrove.

First of all, thank you to the FOSS Hack 2026 team for organizing such an amazing event and for creating a platform where deserving open-source projects can be showcased. I’m grateful that our project was among those recognized.

Congratulations and best wishes to all the fellow winners and participants. For me, the journey doesn’t end with the hackathon. Open source is a long-term commitment. The real impact comes from continuing to build, improving with the same energy, and growing a community around the project.

I hope everyone had a chance to explore the incredible projects built during the event by fellow participants. If a project’s vision resonates with you, consider contributing, sharing feedback, or simply supporting the builders behind it. That’s what makes open source special.

Let’s continue building things for everyone, together.

Thank you once again, and best wishes to everyone who participated in this wonderful FOSS Hack.
