Good
- This was a special 2nd-anniversary meetup, which we had been planning for quite some time.
- Rippling provided a nice venue with good capacity and thanks to Sweta for handling all communications with Rippling end to end including some requirements requested by the speaker.
- As usual, we followed the custom of starting with introductions from everyone and their involvement in FOSS.
- The women participation has been improving continuously and it’s great to see JTD girls consistently in the meetups.
- During this intro, we also came across folks with backgrounds in design and it was great to see them at the meetup. In the future, we definitely would love to have a meetup focussed on “FOSS for Design”
- The opening note by Aakansha and Sai Rahul was a great start highlighting the story behind the FOSS BLR meetup and the journey with Stats so far.
- We had a very diverse set of talks this time including software, hardware, inspirational stories, and tech policies. Each session had a different perspective and a message to convey.
- The Talk by Balu on Building your Hardware was thoroughly engaging with amazing demos. He also got a 3D printer to demo how it works and the audience enjoyed it to the fullest.
- The talk by Dhananjay about the future of Girls in tech and the vision of JTD (Joining the Dots) was truly inspirational and the audience was able to connect to it. We hope this will also lead to future collaborations with DSR (Developer Social Responsibility)
- The talk by Udayraj was a true FOSS story about the growth of one of the popular libraries OMR checker - solving a problem, building a community, running and maintaining it.
- Each session had a QnA as well on stage which made it more interactive as well.
- Engaging policy discussion moderated by Sai Rahul and the panelists - each panelist had a different background. Shree on hardware, Sai Krishna on data aspect of policy, Anwesha on legal aspects, and Jayasri on software aspects. Each of them shared a different perspective from their experiences which was very helpful and made the panel very diverse and engaging.
- Thanks to our MCs Yusuf and Sweta for running the show and keeping the audience engaged throughout.
- Thanks to Ansh, Harsh, and Vishal for helping with all queries and help related to the FOSS platform
- This was the first time we also scheduled a meeting with the speakers to get an overview of the talk and make sure the expectations were set right and all of us aligned on the same page. This meeting was very helpful for us and the speakers as well. As per Panel discussion, we always have a meeting to discuss the overview and the agenda of the Panel to make sure it runs smoothly and everyone gets the space to share their thoughts.
- We also updated the logo to highlight 2nd year and thanks to Jacob and Ishan.
- We got great feedback in person and also anonymously (over the Google forms shared over email) as well.
- The meeting was meticulously planned, with special posters for the 2 year celebration, theme selection, and others. Kudos to the whole team for the same.
The Bad
- Unfortunately, there was some miscommunication about the break time due to which snacks didn’t arrive at the scheduled time and we had to stretch the meetup and have a tea break in between to refresh. The snacks arrived post Panel Discussion and this led to eating up lunchtime as we wrapped up the meetup at 3:20 pm.
We will try our best to make sure this doesn’t happen in future meetups.
The Ugly
- Nothing :).
Overall, our second anniversary meetup was awesome and one of the best FOSS meetups with a very diverse collection of talks and an audience too.
