Post Mortem Report - FOSS United Chennai July meetup
The July Meetup took place at IITM Research Park, Build Labs Office. We had over 30 participants in the meetup which took place form 2PM - 5PM ( +30 )
Agenda was not decided for the meetup, had a rough count of 30 mins for each speaker and 10 mins for opening note and ending feedback discussion,
Some other statistics
The Good
We received great CFP’s, and most of the participants were new totally new to FOSS.
The talks given in the event were really good and inspiring. two of our speakers dropped out, Good that we had a long time FOSS Chennai speaker Sonali she was able to present a super good talk at the right time.
The venue coordinators were super helpful and super excited in attending the event, also the participants got a chance to explore the inventions that was happening at the Build labs at IITM Research Park.
We tried a on spot feedback discussion , kind of open table discussion which went well. We got few inputs re:what the new community folks expect from us.
The Snacks were pre ordered, we arranged a minimal biscuits which came in a biodegradable pouch. This reduced the wastage of the food.
The Bad
The participants felt difficult to spot the venue.
We are not well prepared for the event , since most of the community volunteers were occupied.
The participants were not much interactive, the talks were at intermediate level. but not all the participants were from tech background. few were sleeping and some seem like they are zoned out.
Only 2 from the 4 speaker showed up for the meetup.
Only 30 from 115 registrants showed up for the event.
The venue doesn’t had a wifi, also there were a shortage of linux system so the speakers presented for their own laps.
The Ugly
Lot of noise created from the back , it distracted the speaker and participants.
Lack of preparation, resulted with unorganised agenda that shorted the networking time for the participants.
Some Thoughts and Learnings
We should check out the volunteers bandwidth to work on the event for making better and well organised events.
Few more questions should be added to the RSVP, to understand the participants and invite the task that would suit the participants.
We got few inputs to host workshops and cyber security related meet-ups.
The Feedback Discussion really worked out well, we should continue to have this in regular basis.
We should also think on changing the time for the event, many participants didn’t had their lunch and few felt drowsy in the meet.
