FOSS United Events Calendar

FOSS United could have a easily-accessible calendar, which showcases a list of events, for example:

  • Events that are hosted by FOSS United (meetups, etc.)
  • Events that are sponsored by FOSS United
  • Other community events related to Open Source (optional)

I’ve tried finding a easy-to-use, self-hosted calendar, but I haven’t had much success with it.

It would be nice if we could find an open-source calendar. If not possible, we can start out with a public Google Calendar.

The calendar link can then be pinned to the Telegram group, and could be attached to the end of the FOSS United Newsletter. :calendar:

That’s a generous idea @aadhav - will definitely try out a draft and put it for POVs shortly. Let’s see how it works.

I have found that there are only two options available:

  • Go self-hosted.
    • Radicale for the CalDAV server.
    • AgenDAV as the web client.
    • The problem? This might be hard to maintain.
  • Use Google Calendar.

There is now a public calendar for FOSS United events (including community partner events) at - Nextcloud

I came across an old topic on the forum and now that we have a Nextcloud instance (thanks @mngsh ), it was easy to create and publish.

I think fossunited can host something like https://foss.events, but for all foss events in India. i think that might be a lot more intuitive than a calendar tbh

It’s a good idea but I (personally) would prefer it if the Community creates and maintains this instead of the Foundation doing it. The Foundation can definitely help financially (e.g. one-time domain purchase, ongoing server costs) but the IMO the Community should actually take care of maintaining the page e.g. updating it with events, regular software upkeep, etc.

It should be pretty straightforward to fork the git repo for the foss.events page and update it to include foss events from India.

Thoughts?

In my humble opinion, both should exist. I subscribe to the public calendar on my phone and on thunderbird and i have easy access via the applications that i use multiple times a day, every day.
