🚀 Linux Installation Party | FOSS Club NIT Srinagar

Hello folks!
This is Akshit Bhardwaj, Team Lead at FOSS Club NIT Srinagar.

We recently hosted a highly engaging Linux Installation Party at NIT Srinagar, aimed at empowering students with hands-on experience in installing and using open-source operating systems. :computer::penguin:

The event kicked off with an insightful introductory session by Mr. Mustafa Zargar (Coordinator, FOSS Club NIT Srinagar) , who highlighted the importance and benefits of open-source software and Linux in today’s tech ecosystem. His talk set the perfect tone for what turned out to be an impactful learning experience.

This was a fully hands-on, in-person session , where our team guided participants step-by-step through installing Linux on their personal machines. From partitioning disks to resolving boot issues, our volunteers ensured that every attendee received personalized support.

:white_check_mark: Key Highlights:

  • Successfully assisted 28 students in installing Linux on their systems
  • Provided real-time troubleshooting for various setup challenges
  • Encouraged participants to back up data beforehand , ensuring zero data loss
  • Fostered a collaborative and supportive learning environment

Among the distributions, Ubuntu emerged as the clear favorite, followed by Linux Mint , both widely appreciated for their user-friendly interfaces and reliability.

:clap: A huge shoutout to our dedicated volunteers and club members who showcased exceptional technical expertise and commitment throughout the event. Their efforts were instrumental in making this session a success, and they stand out as strong mentors for future workshops.

:bar_chart: Reflection & Learnings:
While the event ran smoothly, one key area for improvement is attendee conversion . Despite ~60 registrations, only 28 students attended. Moving forward, we aim to implement better reminder strategies and engagement methods to bridge this gap.

:star2: Overall, we are incredibly proud of our team’s effort and the enthusiasm shown by the participants. This event marks another step forward in building a strong open-source culture on campus.

What went well at the meetup?
Attendee Response: The event was extremely well-received, resulting in a packed venue. Attendees showed genuine enthusiasm and high engagement throughout the hands-on building phase.
Team Execution: The team effectively managed a large audience through both theory and practical implementation, wrapping up the session smoothly with certificate distribution.

What could be improved?
Prerequisites management needs tightening. Although pre-requisites were communicated beforehand via email, several participants arrived without Linux or WSL configured on their laptops. Assisting them on-site consumed valuable workshop time. For future hands-on workshops, the team will set up a pre-event installation booth or require environment verification prior to the session.

Open Source Tools Used:
Frappe Framework, Bench CLI, Linux, WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), MariaDB, Python, Git

Challenges in using those tools:
Configuring Linux/WSL environments on various attendee laptops during the event created temporary bottlenecks and slowed down the start of the practical coding phase.

Crowd Favorite Tool:
Frappe Framework and Bench CLI — participants were impressed by how efficiently Bench simplifies app scaffolding and full-stack development.
