You’ve probably heard of OpenStreetMap - it’s a community-owned map of the world made by people like you, licensed under a copyleft open data license. It’s used (and improved) by
- FOSS projects like Organic Maps, OsmAnd, KDE Marble, GNOME Maps, and FlightGear
- companies like OLA, Strava, Swiggy, Zomato, Niantic (Pokemon Go and Ingress), Amazon Logistics, Uber, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft
- organizations like Wikipedia and Doctors Without Borders.
A mapping party is a meetup where people new to OpenStreetMap learn about the project, how to use it, and how to contribute to it. Then, everyone works together to improve the map of an area for others. Finally, we grab something to eat and drink.
Improving OSM is easy and fun. You don’t need any special background to do it - you just need to be able to use a smartphone or laptop.
