MumbaiFOSS 2024 Retrospective

The Good:

  • The turnout was almost more than what we expected, if I’m not wrong we had a total of 230-240 people at the event.
  • The sessions were pretty good and the speakers were well versed with what they were talking about.
  • The Panel discussion turned out to be really good with Prasad Khake, Kovid, Ankush and Anoop from bruno. Folks spoke about how they aren’t yet burnout but still joined the panel with the title named “Maintainer Burnout in FOSS Projects”.
  • We were able to take almost 1-3 questions after every talk.
  • We kept the talk duration flexible according to what the speaker asked for from a pool of 30 minutes.
  • The audience were a lot of students, professionals and even some post 40 years old professionals.
  • The Male is to female ratio was also pretty good, we saw a lot of females in the conference.
  • The food was also very good and also a bit costly looking at the conference budget
  • We had The Commit Company and Frappe as our sponsors for this conference
  • We had students from 11th-12th std to final year btech engineers.
  • The Mural Painting turned out to be pretty good with 5 people working on it in the Frappe Office.
  • The designs were pretty good for the social media and stuff.
  • People took a lot of interest in the policy discussion and Anupam was surrounded by crowd after the policy discussion.
  • All the volunteers were very energetic in the event and they learnt a lot of new things as it was their first time volunteering for a event like this.

The Bad

  • There was no fan in the lunch area and it was very hot.
  • Outside the venue as well we did not have fans till the afternoon for the project showcase people.
  • The workshop classroom was pretty far from the main auditorium
  • We tried doing livestream through only FOSS software and not using an iPhone but at the end nothing was reliable and the livestream broke.
  • There was a lot of no-communication from the leads to the volunteers because of virtual chat and not dividing the tasks earlier.
  • It was a bit chaotic in the volunteer meeting before the conference but at the end tasks were divided properly.
  • We started the conference 5 minutes late and hence the schedule also moved almost by 10-15 minutes ahead.
  • In the evening, the tea vendor was stuck in traffic and was stopped by security guards at the IIT Gate which lead to 15-20 minutes of delay and we had to increase the break time to 30 minutes.
  • We couldn’t announce the community partners as it we ran out of time for announcing stuff.

The ugly

  • Only 1 female speakers in the Workshop
