Proposing FOSS Prayagraj: Launching a New Community Chapter

Hi FOSS United team,
I am Shivansh Chaurasiya, really want to bring a vibrant FOSS Chapter to Prayagraj. It’s about building a community that genuinely helps each other grow. Prayagraj needs a central hub for open-source learning and collaboration.

Plan for FOSS Prayagraj :

1).Monthly Meetups: Aim for 2-3 hour sessions with 3-6 talks, targeting 20-50 people initially.

2).Flexible Venues: We’ll partner with local Prayagraj colleges or co-working spots for sponsored event space – no fixed address, just accessibility.

3).Building the Local Team:I’m actively reaching out and gathering passionate individuals within Prayagraj who can form the core local organizing team on the ground.

First Meetup Idea (Tentative): “FOSS 101: Why Open Source Matters.” Aiming for a weekend afternoon, late August/early September 2025.

I’ve carefully reviewed your guidelines and standards and am committed to making this a success. I’m especially excited about your support, including the meetup grants.

Looking forward to about how we can make FOSS Prayagraj a reality.

Best,
Shivansh Chaurasiya

Thanks so much Shivansh for your thoughtful proposal. it’s really exciting to see your enthusiasm for open source and your initiative to bring a FOSS chapter to Prayagraj.

Looking forward to seeing FOSS Prayagraj come alive.

Hi Shivansh,

Thank you for reaching out and for the thoughtful plan you’ve shared for FOSS Prayagraj. Apologies for the delayed response on our end. We’ve been tied up with ongoing community work over the past few weeks.

That said, timelines aside, we’re in a good place now. We have a core team and a group of volunteers who are genuinely passionate and motivated to get this moving. We’re aligned with the idea of starting with something along the lines of “FOSS 101: Why Open Source Matters” for the first meetup, and we’re excited to take this forward.

Before we proceed, we have a few clarifications we’d like help with, mainly around funding and the proposal process:

  • We’d like to better understand how event funding works for local meetups.
  • We’ve gone through the grants page at https://fossunited.org/grants/events, which is a helpful reference.
  • We’ve also read through the event proposal documentation here: https://docs.fossunited.org/event-proposals
  • We wanted to confirm whether the funding.json format applies to events and meetups as well, or if that’s specific to other grant types.
  • Additionally, we came across mentions that larger events or meetups are usually partially funded by FOSS United, with the rest covered through tickets or sponsors. We’d appreciate it if you could point us to the right documentation or guidelines that explain this funding model and what the grant application typically focuses on.

Looking forward to your guidance so we can move ahead in the right direction and make FOSS Prayagraj a solid, sustainable community.

Best regards,
Agamya
