Self-host a Peertube instance for publishing videos

I would like to volunteer to setup a PeerTube instance to host event videos. The videos of the previous edition could also be hosted on this instance in a separate channel.

This will enable people to view the videos and have discussions around them without having to use Youtube and hence, avoiding getting tracked etc.

Needless to say PeerTube is Free Software licended under AGPL-3.0 and this could be a good way to popularize its use in our community.

All that’s required is a server with sufficient storage to host the videos. PeerTube will also transcode the videos to multiple resolutions.

Sure - we can post in both platforms :+1:

@Abhas are you still interested and able to help us setup a peertube instance? Re: FOSS United and FOSS (one of the things we want to explore is exactly this.)

cant we just use our stream.fossunited.org for storing videos as well? yes its not federated but it does the job pretty well

  1. Because the videos on stream.fossunited.org aren’t post-processed e.g. the videos don’t show slides
  2. Because of bandwidth issues, the videos on stream.fossunited.org are “glitchy” e.g. there are jitters, there are significant changes in the audio of streams (e.g. for some streams i had to use headphones, other streams i could just use my laptop audio)
  3. Minor point but I still want to point this out - some of the videos start and end abruptly e.g. the stream starts in the middle of a talk and it ends in the middle of a talk

Even if 2 and 3 are fixed through better logistics and a dedicated volunteer managing the streams next year, solving 1 might be difficult e.g. what to do when the speaker is doing a live demo? can we screencap the HDMI output from the speaker laptop and stream it too?

never mind. this problem is already solved in the streams. the post-processing is what is missing from stream.fossunited.org

the videos om stream.fossunited.org are just the live stream contents converted to video form

If i’m not wrong we did the same this year. The bigger box in the screen had the input coming from the laptop. For ex: FOSS United Streaming - IndiaFOSS 2024 Live! | DAY 1 | AUDI 1 in this stream skip forward -00:21:00 to see ente’s talk having the slide in the bigger box.

And for demo’s you can check this stream FOSS United Streaming - Adopting Compose and KMM: Our Journey to Multiplatform App Development. at the end they are performing one demo.

I actually tried showing Frappe Builders demo, but the server just ran out of disk space and Frappe Builders clip just broke.
P.S: The Clip just took long to process
.
And also, looking at the choppiness in some stream recordings, i don’t think they should be published as the only source like rahul said.
