Tool Use Cases + Agent Backbone: tested AI-tool break writeups (OpenCode free-tier fix, Agents SDK MCP serialize lock)

Posting in Project Showcase: we’ve been publishing unpaid, reproducible notes on AI coding agents and MCP plumbing under Lali Publications / Tool Use Cases.

What it is

Recent engineering notes (all $0 / editorial)

  1. OpenCode free tier: “1.18.0 or newer is required”
We reproduced on npm/Linux (Oct 31, 2026): 1.17.20 fails; moving to OpenCode v2 (@opencode/cli) recovers free models in our test.
Writeup: OpenCode "1.18.0 or newer is required to use the free tier": the fix, tested
Upstream tracker: Free tier issues: read this first, then post your report here · Issue #59387 · anomalyco/opencode · GitHub

  2. OpenAI Agents SDK 0.24 + mcp 2.x: parallel MCP calls run serially
Four 3s tools → 12.1s wall time over streamable HTTP (Nov 4 repro, no API key).
Issue: MCPServerStreamableHttp serializes all requests on mcp 2.x, so parallel tool calls run one at a time · Issue #5474 · openai/openai-agents-python · GitHub

Why showcase this here
These are documentation + reproduction artifacts meant for builders debugging real tools — citations to upstream issues/PRs, commands you can re-run, and explicit “when NOT to use” notes. No affiliate links.

Upcoming
A terminal walkthrough of the Agents SDK #5474 break (What Broke This Week Episode 2) is scheduled for Friday Nov 6, 2026 at 5:00 AM PT on @lalipublications. No public video URL at post time; I can reply with it after publish if useful.

Happy to take technical questions or corrections in-thread.

The writeup on the MCP stdio/SSE serialization lock is really useful. In practice, a lot of MCP server hangs happen when a tool call spawns a child process that inherits open stdout/stderr file descriptors or writes non-JSON-RPC log lines to stdout, which wedges the transport framing parser.

Are you also tracking timeout and cancellation propagation (notifications/cancelled) across the Python and TypeScript MCP SDKs in your rubric?
