Event Report 1 : Intro To OpenSource
We conducted an introduction session for beginners who are interested in OpenSource but dont know how to start.
Event Structure
The event was thought of as an mechanism to solve some queries that everyone starting confronts and therefore the event was tactically made in such a format that would answer all these questions.
- What does Open Source mean?
- Some major OpenSource tech you use daily
- Why OpenSource at all?
- How does OpenSource work if no one pays?
- What’s in it for me?
- Can I also contribute to OpenSource
- How to start?
- What is a license?
- Some cool OSS programs
- Q/A
FeedBack Analysis
The Bad
- The event was mainly targeted towards first and second years, so those who were from third and fourth felt a bit missed out.
- The event was 2 hours long, so was a bit tough for everyone to sit through it
The Good
- The general consensus was very good with everyone having great clarity.
- We were bombarded with questions in Q/A showing the peeps were genuinely interested in OpenSource after the session.
- More than 150 people showed up, which is significant considering only 600-700 students are present in IIT Bhilai.
Learnings:
- Keeping sessions short and crisp.
- Letting the peeps know the exact target audience or having more inclusive events

Event Report 2 : Linux Installation Party
we conducted a linux installation party for those who wanted to get shifted to a linux distro but were either not able to or afraid to or just werent able to fiddle around.
Event Structure
- The event primarly introduced everyone to which exactly Linux is.
- Why to shift to a linux distro?
- What changes we might make in your laptops (in case someone wanted to back off).
- One-on-one mentorship onto how to install.
- Some basic commands
- A bit of scripting
FeedBack Analysis
The overall feedback for the event was highly positive. Though the number of attendees were a bit low (~30) but this limited audience allowed the core team to handle just 2-3 students each and because of that they were able to not only teach them how to install linux but also some tips and tricks .

Core Member Recruitment Drive

The recruitment process started on october 28; a form was shared where interested students had to fill in details about themselves, their expertise, and their inspiration to join the club.
In true open-source spirit, we used OpnForm to collect applications and Jitsi to interview the shortlisted students, staying committed to the tools and values that define FOSS.
Our team structure includes one Club Lead and eight core members, each vital in shaping and supporting our activities.
What does a core member do?
- Ideation and Innovation: Bring fresh ideas for workshops, hackathons, and other events.
- Event Promotion: Spread the word and build excitement to maximize participation.
- Organizing and Conducting Events: Plan, coordinate, and host events that inspire and engage our community.
- Technical Expertise: Share your knowledge, inspire curiosity, and help others explore open-source tools and technologies.
Individuals were selected based on their ability to fulfill the above responsibilities and their expertise level in their domain of interest. We aimed at finding all-rounders to enable the team to share responsibilities and collaborate seamlessly.

FOSS 101: Open Source Unveiled
We conducted our first event, FOSS 101: Open Source Unveiled, in the month of November. This introductory session was designed to spread awareness about Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and its importance.
We began by discussing what FOSS is and how it differs from proprietary software, highlighting its key advantages such as feasibility, better security, and the wide variety of options available. The session also covered the history of FOSS, popular tools like Git, Linux, and Mozilla Firefox, and a few open-source projects that serve as great examples of collaboration and innovation.
To build excitement, we shared a detailed plan of the upcoming events and activities that the club aims to organize. We also interacted with attendees to understand their expectations and assured them of the support and guidance they can expect from the club.
The event saw active participation from 35+ attendees, making it a successful and interactive session. The enthusiasm and positive feedback from the participants have motivated us to continue working hard to build a stronger community and provide valuable resources for open-source enthusiasts at IIT Bhilai.
Feedback Analysis
Challenges:
- The event took place just before the annual fest, so many students were occupied with preparations for the fest, leading to lower participation. However, the timing was unavoidable.
Positive Points:
- Overall feedback was very positive, with attendees gaining clear insights on the topic.
- The Q&A session was very interactive, showing genuine interest in Open Source after the session.
- Many expressed eagerness to contribute to Open Source and make use of OSS.
