We are thrilled to announce that the FOSS United Shivamogga Chapter will be hosting a Local Edition of FOSS Hack 2024 at the Jawaharlal Nehru New College of Engineering, Shivamogga! This is your chance to be part of a nationwide hackathon promoting Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Dates: 27th & 28th July, 2024
  • Duration: 36 hours
  • Venue: MBA Block, Jawaharlal Nehru New College of Engineering, Shivamogga.
  • Participation:
    • In-person: We are currently targeting 180 slots available for offline participants.
    • Online: Participation for online coders is unlimited. We welcome tech enthusiasts from all over India to join virtually!

(The targeted duration of 36 hours and the 180 offline participant capacity are based on our current planning. These details may be subject to adjustments based on final budget and event schedule)

FOSS Hack 2024 - Must-Know Information for In-Person Participants

Dear participant,

We’re excited to welcome you to the in-person edition of FOSS Hack 2024 at JNNCE Shivamogga! This message provides important details to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Venue: MBA-MCA Block, JNNCE Campus, Navule, Shivamogga (Entrance and venue at the 1st Gate)

Venue Opens: 7.30 AM

Timings: 8am 27 July 2024 - 6pm 28th July 2024

  • Buses will be arranged for usual routes at 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM (college arrival time). Please check with the organizers or refer to previous days’ timings for your area.
  • Registration starts at 8:30 AM and ends at 9:20 AM.
  • The inauguration ceremony will be held at 9:30 AM.

In-person Slots: 180 participants

Accommodation:

  • Paid accommodation for the previous night (including dinner, stay, and breakfast) can be arranged in the college hostel upon request (~200 INR). Space is limited, so please submit your request by Thursday, July 25th at 4 PM using the FOSS Hack Accommodation Request Form: https://forms.gle/KyzK5kHTn5ri9oN87
  • Payment for the hostel will be made directly at the hostel on the same day before occupying the room.
    -Hostel check-in will start from 6 PM on Friday, July 26th and check-out by 8 AM on Saturday, July 27th. Please abide by the hostel rules during your stay.

Weather and Essentials:

  • As it’s the rainy season, please bring umbrellas and warm clothes. Also get all your medications and kit.
  • You may bring your favorite snacks if needed.

Food:

  • All meals (from Saturday afternoon lunch to Sunday evening snacks) are arranged for in-person participants.

Transportation:

  • Regular buses will operate on Saturday morning.
  • A return bus from the college to Shivamogga Government Bus Terminal will be arranged on Sunday evening.

Important Information:

  • Kindly join the FOSS Hack WhatsApp group for all updates, including the event flow: link is shared through email for in-person selected participants. This group will be used for Q&A sessions and sharing FOSS Hack updates. There will be a Q&A session with the organizers on Thursday, July 25th at 7 PM. The link will be shared in the group.

FOSS Hack 2024 Shivamogga - Post Event Report

The Good

  • Excellent participant turnout: With 166 participants, it demonstrates the high level of interest in the hackathon.
  • Engaged mentors: The dedicated mentors played a crucial role in guiding participants and boosting project development.
  • Creative project ideas: The range of projects showcased the participants’ innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Positive atmosphere: The event fostered a collaborative and creative atmosphere, inspiring participants to work together towards their goals.
  • Pitch session: The culminating pitch session showcased participants’ innovative projects and fostered a competitive yet collaborative spirit.
  • Open mic session: The open mic session provided a platform for participants to share their experiences, insights, and feedback, strengthening the sense of community.
  • Successful partnerships: The collaboration with the college for venue, support staff, and additional resources was instrumental in the event’s success. The chat stall proved to be a valuable addition.
  • Excellent support from college mess: They demonstrated exceptional support by providing additional food on short notice to accommodate the unexpected increase in attendees on the 27th afternoon and evening. And undoubtedly supported throughout the event overnight.
  • Engaging atmosphere: Beyond coding, participants actively engaged in a diverse range of activities, fostering a vibrant and inclusive community. These included typing speed contests, buzzer quizzes, talent show, board games, chess, active sport games, open-theatre setup, video games, night walks encouraging the networking session, and many other engaging activities kept everyone active over the time.
  • Overwhelmingly positive feedback: Participants expressed high satisfaction with the hackathon, indicating a successful event.
  • Prize incentives: The goodies for top projects and extra activities motivated participants and added to the competitive spirit.
  • Strong community building: The hackathon sparked interest in contributing to the local FOSS community, with multiple participants expressing their desire to volunteer for future events.

The Bad

  • WiFi Connectivity Issues: Initial disruptions in WiFi connectivity due to BSNL issue temporarily hindered our smooth flow.
  • Power Supply Challenges: Multiple extension cord failures due to blown fuses because of heavy load briefly interrupted few teams but it was replaced in no time.
  • Participant attrition: A small number of teams had to leave early due to unforeseen circumstances.

Conclusion

The FOSS Hack 2024 Shivamogga was a resounding success, marked by an incredible turnout, enthusiastic participation, and a strong sense of community. The event effectively combined technical challenges with a fun and engaging atmosphere, fostering creativity, collaboration, and learning.
This event would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of our volunteers. Their tireless work contributed significantly to creating a memorable and impactful experience for all participants.
The overwhelming positive feedback from participants is a testament to the event’s impact. We look forward to building upon this success for future editions.
