We are thrilled to announce that the FOSS United Shivamogga Chapter will be hosting a Local Edition of FOSS Hack 2025 at PES Institute of Technology & Management, Shivamogga! This is your chance to be part of a nationwide hackathon promoting Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Dates: 22th & 23th Feb, 2025
  • Duration: 36 hours
  • Venue: Main Seminar Hall, PESIT&M.
  • Participation:
    • In-person: We are currently targeting 100 slots available for offline participants.
    • Online: Participation for online coders is unlimited. We welcome tech enthusiasts from all over India to join virtually!

FOSS Hack 2025 - Must-Know Information for In-Person Participants

Dear participant,

We’re excited to welcome you to the in-person edition of FOSS Hack 2025 at PESIT&M Shivamogga! This message provides important details to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Venue: Main Seminar Hall, PES Institute of Technology & Management, Shivamogga (Entrance and venue at the 2nd Gate). Link to Maps📍

Venue Opens: 7.30 AM

Timings:

  • Buses will be arranged for usual routes at 7:15 am. Timings attached below, kindly ensure to be present at 7:15 am at your nearest stop.

  • Registration starts at 7.40 AM and ends at 8.30 AM.

Accommodation:

  • Paid accommodation for the previous night can be arranged in the college hostel upon request (~150 INR). Please book your stay by emailing at shivamogga@fossunited.org

  • Payment for the hostel will be made directly at the hostel on the same day before occupying the room.

Weather and Essentials:

  • Please get clothing as per weather necessities.
  • You may bring your favorite snacks if needed.

Food:

  • All meals (from Saturday afternoon lunch to Sunday evening snacks) are arranged for in-person participants.

Transportation:

  • Regular buses will operate on Saturday morning.
  • A return bus from the college to Shivamogga Government Bus Terminal will be arranged on Sunday evening.

Important Information:

  • It’s mandatory to join the FOSS Hack WhatsApp group for all updates, including the event flow: WhatsApp Group Invite. This group will be used for Q&A sessions and sharing FOSS Hack updates. There will be a Q&A session with the organizers on Thursday, July 25th at 7 PM. The link will be shared only on the WhatsApp group.

FOSS Hack 2025 Shivamogga - Post Event Report

The Good

  • Excellent participant turnout : With 190 participants, it demonstrates the high level of interest in the hackathon.
  • Creative project ideas : The range of projects showcased the participants’ innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Positive atmosphere : The event fostered a collaborative and creative atmosphere, inspiring participants to work together towards their goals.
  • Successful partnerships : The collaboration with the college for venue, support staff, and additional resources was instrumental in the event’s success. The chat stall proved to be a valuable addition.
  • Excellent support from college mess: They demonstrated exceptional support by providing additional food on short notice to accommodate the unexpected increase in attendees and undoubtedly supported throughout the event overnight.
  • Overwhelmingly positive feedback : Participants expressed high satisfaction with the hackathon, indicating a successful event.
  • Strong community building: The hackathon sparked interest in contributing to the local FOSS community, with multiple participants expressing their desire to volunteer for future events.
  • Stable and Reliable WiFi Connectivity: The event ran smoothly with uninterrupted WiFi, ensuring participants had seamless access to online resources throughout.
  • Efficient Power Management: The power supply remained stable, with well-managed extensions and backups in place to support all teams without any interruptions.

The Bad

  • Limited Mentor Engagement: While mentors were present, due to unforeseen circumstances, they were not able to provide as much guidance to students as expected, leaving some participants wishing for more in-depth support to refine their projects further.

Pitch Session Challenges: The final pitch session, though structured, felt rushed for some teams, limiting the opportunity to fully showcase their innovative ideas.

Conclusion

FOSS Hack 2025 Shivamogga was nothing short of spectacular, bringing together a vibrant community of innovators, problem-solvers, and open-source enthusiasts.
